Mathematical Modeling and Analysis
In this paper, we describe our algorithm for computing disk self-gravity interactions in proto-planets simulations. Proto-planet simulations seek to understand planet and solar system formation. Because of the long time scales involved, numerical simulations can be very computationally expensive. The most expensive part of these simulations is the disk self-gravity calculation, which takes orders of magnitude longer than all other calculations combined. Our algorithm uses a parallel tree-code to accelerate this calculation 300-500 times over direct methods. Also, we describe the interaction forces and our model used to approximate and compute them efficiently.
