Mathematical Modeling and Analysis
The Turbulence Work Group aims to develop a new approach to understand and model subgrid scale effects on resolved scales in the physics of fluid turbulence based on new geometrical and statistical mathematics, new computational methods and new experiments of great dynamic range. When we apply our approach to turbulence modeling, we call it the Navier-Stokes alpha model. We hope the progress we make in this project based on the NS-alpha model shall also extend naturally to a wide range of other important applications, e.g., in plasma physics, MHD astrophysics, geosciences, ocean and atmosphere dynamics, complex fluids and combustion.
