Flag of the Métis Nation. It looks modern, but dates back to 1816. I conjecture that I am the first Manitoba Métis to obtain a Ph.D. in mathematics.

• Hiking: down canyons, up mountains... Favorite non-local places are in southern Utah. Generally prefer dry places to wet places. I think green is overrated.
• Table tennis: my USATT rating is 1765. This means I'm about average among tournament players in the US. Among non-tournament, non-club players, I kick butt.
• Skiing: my favorite thing to do with the kids. Riding up the lift, they more or less have to talk to you.
• Hockey: currently ice hockey, street hockey when I lived in Berkeley. Better at street hockey, as my skills are better than my skating.
• Cooking: in truth, this is just a cover for eating.
• Other sports: I've dabbled in many different sports, to varying degrees of seriousness. I appreciate those that help offset the eating thing.
• Languages: thanks to a Mexican nanny, my children are fluent in Spanish. I'm trying to catch up. Meanwhile, we're all learning Mandarin. I learned French in school in Canada, emerging nearly fluent, but Spanish has pushed most of it out. Dabbled in Russian (for math) and Ukrainian (many friends back in Winnipeg).
